Abstract

The cytostatic properties of a series of fifteen lactones from some Compositae collected in the Canary Islands were examined. Nine of these lactones were isolated for the first time in the Instituto de Productos Naturales Organicos of Tenerife. It would seem that an α–methylene–γ–lactone grouping in the molecule is essential for cytotoxic activity.
