Summary

In order to test, whether chronic hepatic diseases might be deteriorated by bioptic examinations, transaminase activities were examined before and soon after liver biopsy in 350 patients. In healthy persons and persons with minor histological changes in the liver a slight or moderate, but only transient increase of GOT and GPT activities was observed after liver biopsy. No significant increase of transaminase activities was observed in those patients, who exhibited already increased activities before liver biopsy (patients with chronic hepatitis, chronic cholangitis, cirrhosis and fatty liver).

Real and continous activation of the liver process was seen only in some patients with cholangitis and partial bile-duct obstruction.
