Abstract

The different organs of A. spectabilis Hook. F. were subjected to preliminary phy to chemical screening.

The Egyptian Pharmacopoeia constants viz., ash, acid – insoluble ash and crude fibre of the different organs were carried out, as well as extraction with successive selective solvents and the subsequent examination of the extracts. TLC investigation of the cardenolides in the successive extracts (ether, chloroform and alcohol) of different organs was presented. The triterpenes were investigated and β–amyrin and friedelin were isolated.

Sucrose and a nitrogenous non–basic compound were isolated from the seeds only. Furthermore, the volatile oil of the flowers was studied for the first time, employing TLC and GLC.
