Development of a Clinical Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Questionnaire
Publication History
Publication Date:
02 February 2018 (online)
Objective To characterize and substantiate superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) patient complaints prior to surgical repair.
Study Design Preoperative surveys of symptom severity and impact on function and quality of life were administered to SSCD patients. Survey data were scored for each patient and subsequently synthesized and assessed for internal consistency.
Setting Academic tertiary care hospital.
Patients Adult patients ranging from 34 to 72 years old, who underwent surgical repair for SSCD between July 2011 and March 2016.
Interventions Surgical repair of SSCD.
Main Outcome Measures Subjective indices of general quality of life (GQL), internal amplified sounds (IAS), tinnitus, and dizziness.
Results A total of 23 patients completed the Gopen-Yang SSCD Questionnaire (GYSSCDQ) prior to surgery. The average GQL score was 28.04 out of 70 possible points. The average IAS score was 16 out of 30 possible points. Tinnitus and dizziness indices averaged 33.30 and 35.13 out of 100 possible points, respectively. The overall Cronbach’s α for the standardized questions in the GQL score, IAS score, tinnitus, and dizziness indices were 0.93, 0.86, 0.97, and 0.96, respectively.
Conclusion Although previous surveys have been conducted in patients with SSCD, they did not fully address SSCD patients’ concerns or evaluate patients’ well-being. The GYSSCDQ presented here provides a holistic assessment of the impact of SSCD symptomatology on overall quality of life and other health metrics. Statistical analysis also supports attenuation of the GQL, tinnitus, and dizziness sections due to Cronbach’s α scores more than 0.85 for these sections.
