Inverted papilloma of the supraglottic area: A case report

    Introduction:

    The inverted papilloma (""Schneider-Papilloma") is a benign, epithelial tumor, which occurs particularly in the area of sinuses, mainly in male patients between the 5th and 6th decades of life. In this casuistry we report an inverted papilloma in the area of supraglottic.

    Anamnesis:

    The 56-year-old patient presented himself in the oncological aftercare consultation after basal cell carcinoma of the right nasal entrance. The carcinoma was resected nine years earlier by a lateral Rhinotomie and treated with adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient does not report any complaints. As a precondition, a bronchial asthma appeared.

    Findings and Therapy:

    In the ENT medical examination, a random finding was found to be an asymmetry of the pocket crease on the right side, of movable vocal lips on both sides. A microlaryngoscopy for histological protection and a transoral laser surgical tumor resection was carried out. Histological results of a biopsy revealed an inverted papilloma of the larynx.

    Discussion:

    Inverted papillomas mainly occur in the sinus maxillary and sphenoidalis and lateral nasal. There are isolated reports of their localizations in the area of the middle ear, the mastoid and the Os temporal, as well as a single case description of an inverted papilloma in a 4-year-old boy in the area of subglottic. An ectopic migration of the Schneider- membrane during embryonic development could be discussed for the seldom occurring localizations.
