Abstract
The pyrrolizidine alkaloid nilgirine on hydrolysis gives retronecine and nilgiric acid. The structure of nilgiric acid is found to be 1–hydroxy–2–methyl–hexa–4–ene–1:4 dicarboxylic acid. This is the first report of a C9 necic acid occurring in pyrrolizidine macrocyclic esters.
