Synthesis of Quaternary Stereocenters through a Radical Cyclization

Significance

The authors report the diastereoselective construction of syn-allyl 2 and syn-vinyl 4 synthons with adjacent stereocenters. This work complements the group’s earlier contribution in synthesis of the anti analogues of these subunits (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1996, 118, 12528). These general reactions giving good yields provide a valuable entry to these highly functionalized and valuable motifs. The syn isomers obtained in this work are particularly interesting since they are difficult to obtain through most other means.
