Significance

Fullerenes are key building blocks for the formation of molecular electronic assemblies and devices. The formation of symmetric analogues for incorporation into structures is important and this report uses anthracene as a directing and removable protecting group to achieve the synthesis of fullerenes with thiocyanatophenyl groups at their poles for binding to gold clusters or surfaces.
