A facile synthesis of the antibacterials, 6-substituted methyl 4-pyridone-3-carboxylates 4, has been accomplished through palladium-catalyzed carbonylative coupling of 2-bromo-3-aminoacrylates 1 with terminal acetylenes 2 followed by cyclization.
