Zusammenfassung

Diabetes mellitus Typ 2 nimmt weltweit zu. Aufgrund der noch immer nicht ganz zufriedenstellenden medikamentösen Standardtherapie und ihrer hohen Kosten ist die intensive Suche nach weiteren Wirkprinzipien und Wirkstoffen gerechtfertigt. Der Artikel gibt einen Überblick über bekannte Wirkprinzipien von in diesem Indikationsbereich verwendeten pflanzlichen Drogen und über die Situation hinsichtlich klinischer Studien. Die Erkenntnisse sind großenteils noch lückenhaft. Ballaststoffhaltige Dogen, insbesondere Flohsamen, scheinen sich zumindest zur adjuvanten Therapie gut zu eignen. Das präventive Potenzial mancher Drogen beim Typ-2-Diabetes wird vermutlich bisher unterschätzt. Weitere Untersuchungen sind aufgrund der allgemein guten Verträglichkeit der bisher identifizierten pflanzlichen Drogen unbedingt zu empfehlen.

Phytotherapeutic options for diabetes mellitus type 2

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus type 2 is increasing worldwide. However, standard oral antidiabetic drugs are still not completely convincing, and also are rather expensive. This justifies the present intensive search for further substances. The article gives an overview of the pharmacological effects of herbal drugs such as cinnamon or bitter cucumber as well as the current state of the respective clinical trials. Although the findings are largely incomplete, fibre-containing remedies, particularly psyllium, are apparently suitable at least for adjuvant therapy. Also the preventive potential of some herbal drugs seems to be largely underestimated. Further studies are recommended due to the good tolerability of the hitherto identified phytotherapeutic remedies.
