Summary

The history of gastroscopy is characterized by different stages being represented by the status of its technical equipment. The method using semi-flexible instruments has long been abandonned. Even the up to now classical prototypes of fiberinstruments are already out of date compared to the most modern fullflexible gastroscopes. Modern gastroscopy requires fullflexible fiber instruments equipped with a bendable tip in order to visualize the fornix region. To day there are no more “blind areas” in the stomach. Better technical equipment now enables intragastric photography, biopsy under vision and collection of material for cytological examinations.

Thus, the technical requirements for early diagnosis of gastric cancer are fulfilled.
