Summary

The importance of recognition of normal and pathological anatomical characteristics of the urethra, prostate, bladder neck and benign prostatic hyperplasia, and the recognition of the role of the arterial blood distribution throughout the prostate and the venous return from the prostatic area is outlined. It is described how these factors influence the technique of transurethral resection for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
