Abstract

A comparative study between the methods commonly used in the determination of the pyrethrin content in pyrethrum flowers viz., Seil, Mercury reduction and the sulphur colorimetric methods was untertaken.

A new Chromatographie method for the estimation of pyrethrin I and pyrethrin II is described and the results are compared with the forementioned methods.

The light petroleum extract of the flowers was chromatographed on Kieselgel G plates: the spots of „pyrethrin I” and „pyrethrin II” were eluted. A colour reagent consisting of phosphoric acid : acetic anhydride (80 : 20 V/V) was heated with the eluate for 2 or 3 minutes at 100° C. (This gives a pink colour only with pyrethrin I and pyrethrin II) and this colour was measured in S. P. 500 spectrophotometer at 550 mμ.
