Abstract
Pressed juices of the aerial parts of Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench are used as unspecific immunostimulants. Putative active compounds may be high-molecular-weight polysaccharides and / or glycoproteins, especially arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs). From a heat treated pressed juice of Echinacea purpurea, a high-molecular-weight AGP fraction was isolated by specific precipitation with Yariv’s reagent and characterized. It could be shown, that main structural elements of the polysaccharide part of AGPs resemble those of the untreated pressed juice and that the content of AGPs is many times higher compared to ethanol treated pressed juices. For AGPs from aerial parts of purple coneflower, different immunomodulating activities have already been shown in vitro.
