Supportive Therapeutic Techniques in High-emetogenic Cancer Chemotherapy

Rationale
In pediatric oncology, survival rates did increase from decade to decade due to systematic stratified and/or randomized study protocols [6]. Nevertheless, side-effects remain a serious problem of cancer chemotherapy, with nausea and vomiting constituting the most distressing problems. Experiencing nausea and vomiting as a cancer patient might result in treatment drop-outs [12]. Here I will illustrate how supportive, mainly psychological behavioral techniques help to alleviate these side effects and thus contribute to the psychosocial care of the pediatric cancer patient, as postulated by the Gesellschaft für Pädiatrische Onkologie und Hämatologie and the Deutsche Leukämie-Forschungshilfe [14]. Here, scientifically evaluated methods have to be used as postulated by Göbel and Henze [6]. Before describing supportive techniques, I will shortly review the physiological basis and the pharmacological treatment of nausea and vomiting.
