Neben der biomedizinischen Grundlagenforschung, der krankheitsorientierten Forschung im Labor und der klassischen klinischen Forschung („klinische Studie“) gewinnt die Versorgungsforschung als 4. Pfeiler der Gesundheitsforschung auch in der Chirurgie zunehmend an Bedeutung.
