Telemedicine in Switzerland – the Example of MedgatePublication History

Abstract
Telemedicine plays a central role in the acute medical care of patients in Switzerland. The Medgate Telemedicine Center has approximately 100 physicians, and for many patients has a function similar to that of a general practice as their first point of contact for medical concerns. Over 900 000 patients received telemedicine care in 2016. Patients can be treated entirely at a distance in about half of all cases. If this is not possible, the telemedicine physicians determine and coordinate further treatment. Telemedicine is also designed to reduce costs and duplication, while maintaining a high quality of patient care. Properly structured processes, evidence-based medical guidelines based on many years of experience as well as regular quality controls are essential in order to ensure high and uniform quality.
