Triarylbismuthanes 2a, 2b and 2d fully substituted with arenes each bearing a π-accepting substituent such as cyano, ester or formyl group, which are inaccessible by a conventional Grignard method, could be easily synthesized by using the iodine-magnesium exchange of iodoarenes with isopropylmagnesium bromide. Furthermore, a convenient route to tris(4-nitrophenyl)bismuthane 2e using the iodine-lithium exchange of 4-iodonitrobenzene with phenyllithium was developed.
