Abstract

A biologically monitored fractionation of the methanolic extracts of the root and fruits of Kigelia pinnata D. C. led to the isolation of the naphthoquinones kigelinone (1), iso-pinnatal (2), dehydro-α-lapachone (3), and lapachol (4) and the phenylpropanoids p-coumaric acid (5) and ferulic acid (6) as the compounds responsible for the observed antibacterial and antifungal activity of the root and kigelinone (1) and caffeic acid (7) from the fruits of this plant.
