Abstract
Patients are increasingly taking a prominent role in the care they receive. Therefore, patient-centric assessment of outcomes in the form of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) is steadily accompanying the traditional clinical ways of measuring the effects of treatment on the patient. PROMs, which measure health-related quality of life, are self-rated and refer to a single time point or clearly defined preceding period. The impact of a clinical intervention can be determined by comparing PROMs pre- and posttreatment. These have a particular relevance in the field of rhinology as the primary aim of treatment is to improve quality of life. Various PROMs have been utilized within sinus surgery over the years, both generic and disease specific. The role of PROMs in frontal sinus surgery is unclear as isolated frontal sinus surgery is performed rarely. Usually frontal sinus surgery is carried out as a part of functional endoscopic sinus surgery where other sinuses are treated concurrently. In addition, the rarity of isolated frontal sinus disease, coupled with heterogeneity in pathophysiology and treatment options, renders any comparison of studies challenging. The scope of this chapter is to summarize the studies on this issue, including any opinions and controversies. It also raises the question of whether the current disease-specific PROMs in rhinology are “fit for purpose” in frontal sinus surgery.
