Summary

Understanding the anatomy of the skin that covers the head allows the surgeon to plan and execute his/her procedure, predict and circumvent obstacles, and thus avoid complications. Evaluating the scalp, placing correct incisions, estimating the amount of skin that may be resected (from the donor area or when correcting scars), and delivering efficient nerve blocks are dependent on the knowledge acquired from studying the anatomy of the skin that overlies the cranium. The complete hair restoration surgeon, familiar with the layers of the integument, is versatile in performing the entire scope of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the scalp.
