Summary
Safety is of upmost importance in hair transplantation, as many reports of unexpected
complications are reported every year. Some unfortunately have involved fatal events in
young patients. The author summarizes important issues on preoperative preparation and
perioperative modifications for safe hair transplantation in patients with potentially
problematic preexisting medical conditions. Treatment of actual emergency situation is
discussed in Chapter 33. Some of the topics discussed are preoperative control of
antithrombotic therapy in patients with coronary artery stents, atrial fibrillation, and
mechanical heart valves. Other medical conditions that necessitate preoperative
attention will also be addressed. Routine preoperative steps and instructions that help
ensure a smooth procedure will also be discussed.
