Summary

Although medical emergencies are encountered infrequently in the hair transplant physician’s practice, preparedness is of utmost importance. Recognition and appropriate treatment of an impending medical emergency can avert a negative and potentially catastrophic outcome. Newer Basic Life Support (BLS) protocols have been adopted by national and pan-national medical groups (e.g., American Heart Association, European Resuscitation Council, Resuscitation Council of Asia) and are consistent in their recommendations. A change from Airway, Breathing, and Circulation (A-B-C) to Compression, Airway, and Breathing (C-A-B) has been validated and adopted, as early and effective chest compressions in conjunction with early cardiac defibrillation have been shown to be correlated with improved out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival. The automated external defibrillator (AED) is an essential equipment in the medical office setting as it is integral in the management of the unresponsive patient. Specific emergency situations and management guidelines are discussed in this chapter.
