Summary
Before endeavoring to undertake a follicular unit excision (FUE) procedure, the surgeon must be aware of how to properly evaluate and map out the donor area for harvesting. Various relevant concerns are also reviewed in this chapter. More specifically, this chapter focuses on developing an understanding of the extent of the safe area, the number of grafts available that can reasonably be harvested, and ways to avoid potential problems in the donor area. Also discussed is the geometry of hair angulation as it relates to FUE as well as the mathematics of scar formation with the FUE technique. This information should lead to more precise and efficient harvesting. This chapter also includes brief discussions of problems such as transection, thinning of the donor area, hypopigmentation, altered hair angles, and methods to avoid and/or manage these possible issues
