Es werden 2 grundsätzliche Verlaufsformen unterschieden – die interstitiell-ödematöse und die nekrotisierende Form – und in 3 Schweregrade eingeteilt. Die Diagnostik orientiert sich an der Klinik mit dem typischen abdominellen Oberbauchschmerz, der Laboranalyse von Serumamylase- oder -lipaseaktivität und den bildgebenden Verfahren.
