ABSTRACT

Low dose radon balneo- and speleotherapy are long standing established and efficient therapies and represent valuable therapeutic options for patients suffering from rheumatic disorders. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive noble gas that can elicit analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Treatments can be taken as bath, vapor bath and in caves or tunnels. The efficacy of low dose radon therapy has been proven empirically and in clinical trials. A peculiarity of the therapy is the sustainability of the achieved improvements which frequently last for many months. This holds true not only for pain but also for joint function, quality of life and reduced need of analgesics. An increasing number of scientific studies unravels the molecular, cellular and systemic actions of low dose radon therapy and puts them in the context of (patho)physiological and clinical concepts. Though the therapy-induced radiation risk is low, a carcinogenic risk cannot be explicitly excluded up to date. Strict medical prescription and careful risk-benefit assessment are therefore indispensable.
