ABSTRACT
The Internet plays a dominant role in the daily life of adolescents. They use it to communicate with friends, to consume music, pictures, and videos or to play online games. But this also can result in the development of an Internet-Use Disorder (IUD; formerly known as Internet addiction) in adolescents. IUD is associated with various negative consequences like a worse general psychological health status, sleep problems, problems in eating behaviour, and poor academic performance. The risk factors for developing IUD are manifold and range from depression, anxiety, and lower life satisfaction up to family difficulties or problems with peers. But there are also protective factors such as social skills, self-esteem, or positive family relations that can counteract the development of an IUD.
The present work gives an overview of the current state of research as well as risk factors and preventive measures for IUD in adolescents.
