”Better Be On Time“ – Risk of Intussusception After Rotavirus Vaccination

Introduction

Rotavirus (RV) is the most frequent cause of diarrhea in infancy. Even though the health burden of RV has decreased in the past 10 years, it still accounts for the highest diarrhea-associated mortality in children<5 years, with nearly 130 000 deaths annually worldwide (Troeger et al., JAMA Pediatr 2018; 172: 958–965). In 2013, the STIKO recommended routine RV immunization in infants and at the same time pointed out the risk of intussusception (Ständige Impfkommission (STIKO), Bundesgesundheitsblatt – Gesundheitsforschung – Gesundheitsschutz 2013; 56: 955–956). However, the benefits of the RV vaccine, outweigh the risks (Marquis and Koch, Pediatr Infect Dis J 2020; 39: e109–e116; Paternina-Caicedo et al., Vaccine 2015; 33: 3923–3928; Vetter et al., Hum Vaccines Immunother 2020; 1–5).
