Abstract

A Ru(II)-catalyzed synthesis of spirobi[indene]dione from phenyl indandione and alkyne is reported. This metal-catalyzed cyclization reaction proceeds through hydroxy group directed C(sp²)–H bond activation, keto–enol tautomerization and alkyne annulation pathways.
