Retinal and Cerebral Cavernous Haemangioma in a Female Patient – Multimodal Imaging

Introduction

Retinal cavernous haemangioma is a rare congenital disorder, a unilateral hamartoma of the retina. Patients are often asymptomatic or may present with decreased vision from vitreous haemorrhage or macular involvement at around the age of 20 years [1]. There is usually a good prognosis for visual acuity [2]. Almost all patients present with retinal cavernous haemangioma between the ages of 7 and 40 years [2], [3]. Fourteen percent of patients also have intracerebral involvement [2]. Ninety percent of the cases have been reported in Caucasians, with even gender distribution. Most patients have no positive family history but in 20% of patients, particularly with bilateral or intracranial involvement, autosomal dominant inheritance is detected [2]. We report a young female with unilateral cavernous haemangioma of the peripheral retina with mild vitreous haemorrhage, associated with cerebral cavernomas and haemorrhagic stroke.
