David E. F. W. M. van Toledo et al. Appendiceal lesions in serrated polyposis patients are easily overlooked but only seldomly lead to colorectal cancer

In a retrospective cohort study including 171 patients with serrated polyposis syndrome (SPS), advanced lesions (i. e. adenocarcinoma, or serrated polyps and/or adenomas with advanced histology) were not found in surgically removed appendix specimens, nor during surveillance colonoscopy. In contrast, nonadvanced lesions were more frequently diagnosed (41.2 % and 0.9 %, respectively). These data do not support prophylactic appendectomy in patients with SPS.
