Ungefähr ein halbes Jahrhundert ist seit der ersten Erwähnung des Begriffes der Frailty in der medizinischen Fachliteratur vergangen. Seitdem wurden fast 30.000 Fachartikel zu diesem wichtigen Thema verfasst. Frailty beschreibt als Konzept ein potenziell reversibles Übergangsstadium auf dem Weg von der vollständigen Autonomie hin zu irreversiblen Funktionsverlusten. In diesem Sinne geht Frailty weit über den Begriff „Gebrechlichkeit“ als deutsche Übersetzung hinaus und umfasst vor allem auch deren Vorstadium [1].
