Abstract
Source and availability of plant-based raw materials for the production of pharmaceutical products The exploitation of plant-based raw materials for the production of pharmaceutical products is complex. Large quantities of raw material are still sourced from the wild. However, the situation in rural areas worldwide is characterized by rural outmigration, which makes it increasingly cumbersome to procure high-quality raw materials in sufficient quantities. Albania for example shows that sustainable, environmentally friendly and quality-oriented wild plant raw material collection requires, among other things, repeated training of collectors, together with the clarification of land use rights, controls and an improvement of post-harvest technology. The domestication of wild plant species and field cultivation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) while taking into account the Good Agricultural and Collection Practice (GACP) guidelines offers the greatest security for the raw material as well as pharmaceutical producers. Applied research continues to play a significant role in the process of domestication as well as the improvement of cultivation and primary processing. Production in remote areas may employ satellite data and drones which are becoming increasingly relevant for quality assurance, risk detection and avoidance, finding new raw material deposits, research and development, and as part of GACP-compliant documentation and audits.
