Sanguisorba officinalis L. (great burnet) from the Rosaceae family is a plant that has long been used in traditional medicine. The herb and roots contain a wide range of phenolic and terpenoid constituents, which primarily have anti-inflammatory and anti-infective effects. The root drug plays an important role in Traditional Chinese Medicine for immune modulation, wound treatment and therapy of infections. However, these indications partially overlap with those of Traditional European Medicine. Despite its long-term therapeutic use, there are still a lot of gaps to be filled with regard to great burnet's current clinical studies.
