Abstract
The effectiveness of vitamin C in the influence of immunogenic
illnesses has been proven with high evidence for parenteral application.
In our case study, three patients with post herpetic neuralgia (PHN)
were observed: two received the basic pain and virostatic therapy and every
second day 15 grams of vitamin C intravenously; the third patient merely was
treated viro-statically and pain-therapeutically in accordance with
WHO-step-scheme. With the patients treated with vitamin C, a total remission of
the PHN (it measured on the basis of the visual analogous-scale) could be
observed beside the remission of the cutaneous efflorescences within 10 days.
The third patient, who required a pain-therapy WHO III intermittently plus
Gabapentin, could be assessed as complaint-free status only after 5 months.
We infer that vitamin C shows a positive therapeutic influence on
the neuropathic pain. Randomized clinical trials are necessary to evaluate in
what way vitamin C has a therapeutic influence of the PHN.
