Abstract
A case of Sandhoff's disease (GM2 gangliosidosis type 2) is reported because of an unusual course with later onset of symptoms, more slow progress and longer survival than those previously described. Otherwise the patient presented most of the classical symptoms of the disease with a final state of blindness, deafness and decerebrate rigidity.
The residual acidic hexosaminidase isozymes in liver and brain tissue were Hex A and Hex S, while Hex B was barely detectable. The neutral hexosaminidase form called Hex C was also found.
Two urinary oligosaccharides containing N-acetylglucosamine and mannose were found to be excreted by the patient.
Zusammenfassung
Ein Fall von Sandhoff's disease (GM2 Gangliosidose Typ 2) ist beschrieben, weil der Verlauf ungewöhnlich ist. Die Symptome fangen später an, progredieren mehr langsam und die Patientin lebt länger als die früher rapportierten Fälle. Sonst zeigt diese Patientin die meisten von den klassischen Symptomen dieser Krankheit mit einem Zustand am Ende von Blindheit, Taubheit und dezerebrierter Rigidität. Die residuale saure Hexosaminidase Isozyme in Leber- und Gehirngeweben waren Hexosaminidase A und Hexosaminidase S, Hexosaminidase B dagegen war kaum zu entdecken. Die neutrale Hexosaminidase, die sogenannte Hexosaminidase C, konnte auch nachgewiesen werden. Zwei Arten von Oligosacchariden mit einem Inhalt von N-acetylglykosamine und Mannose konnten im Harn der Patientin nachgewiesen werden.
