Diagnostic Aid of Aspiration Biopsy Cytology in Brain Lesions

Summary

In a series of 28 neurosurgical cases we tried to assess the value of aspiration biopsy cytology from brain lesions during the operation. Cytological aspirates during craniotomy were compared with simultaneously performed frozen section biopsies. Cytology was correct in 24 out of 28 cases (86 %). It is concluded that aspiration cytology permits a safe microscopic diagnosis provided the specimens are cellular and representative. Cases are mentioned where this technique can be very useful and/or the only way to obtain microscopic evidence of a malignant tumour before treatment.

Zusammenfassung

In einer Serie von 28 neurochirurgischen Fällen versuchten wir den Wert der aspirationsbioptischen Zytologie von Hirnläsionen während der Operation nachzuweisen. Zytologische Präparate wurden mit gleichzeitig während der Kraniotomie gewonnenen Gefrierschnitten verglichen. Die Zytologie war bei 24 Fällen richtig (86 %). Es wird geschlossen, daß die Aspirationszytologie eine sichere mikroskopische Diagnose ermöglicht, vorausgesetzt, das Material enthält Zellen und ist repräsentativ. Es werden Fälle beschrieben, in denen diese Technik sehr nützlich und die einzige Möglichkeit ist, histologische Gewißheit eines malignen Tumors vor dem Beginn der Theapie zu erlangen.
