Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in the Differential Diagnosis of Cerebello-Pontine Angle Tumors

Summary

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is discussed in the differential diagnosis of cerebello-pontine angle tumors. Because of the cryptic nature of this lesion it is frequently erroneously diagnosed and treated. Review of the local anatomy and growth characteristics explain its propensity to present with progressive unilateral multiple cranial nerve involvement. Focusing attention on these factors will hopefully facilitate earlier recognition of this condition.

Es wird das nasopharyngiale Karzinom in der Differentialdiagnose von Kleinhirnbrückenwinkeltumoren besprochen. Wegen der versteckten Lokalisation dieser Erkrankung wird sie häufig falsch diagnostiziert und behandelt. Ein Überblick über die topographische Anatomie und Wachstumscharakteristik erklärt die Neigung zu fortschreitenden unilateralen multiplen Hirnnervensymptomen. Die Berücksichtigung dieser Faktoren erleichtert die Früherkennung.

On évoque le carcinome rhino-pharyngé dans le diagnostic différentiel avec la tumeur de l'angle. Vu la localisation dissimulée de cette tumeur, le diagnostic et le traitement en sont souvent erronés. La tendance à la paralysie unilatérale de plusieurs nerfs craniens s'explique par son anatomie topographique et les modalités de son extension.
