Abstract
The effects of procaine and lidocaine on the insulin secretion from rabbit pancreas pieces were studied with a radioimmunological method. High concentrations of procaine and lidocaine were found to inhibit the insulin secretion, while low concentrations of procaine and lidocaine showed a stimulating effect. Atropine and hexamethonium did not block the inhibitory or most of the stimulatory effects of the local anesthetics, therefore the effects of the local anesthetics seem at least partially independent of the acetylcholine receptors. Effects on the calcium-movement in the β-cells and on serotonin-receptors in the islets are discussed as possible mechanisms of action.
