Abstract

The effects were investigated of high doses of insulin and anti-insulin serum (AIS) on lipolysis induced by serum in isolated fat cells of the rat. Insulin in high dosage could not be shown to inhibit the serum-induced lipolysis, nor did it affect the basal rate of lipolysis. This is compatible with observations of the lipolytic effects of plasma obtained from maturity-onset diabetics, where there is a high level of endogenous insulin. The rate of glucose uptake by adipocytes incubated in the absence of serum was related to the concentration of added insulin. When serum was present, however, no such relationship was observed. No obvious effects of AIS on serum lipolytic activity could be demonstrated, thus corroborating the insulin-insensitivity of the serum-induced lipolytic process.
