Abstract
We studied the effects of somatotropin (STH), theophylline, calcium and seven chelating agents of calcium (EGTA, EDTA, citrate, fluoride, imidazole, methyl-1-imidazole, methyl-2-imidazole) on the rate of uptake of D-xylose by isolated diaphragms of hypophysectomized rats.
Theophylline increases the uptake due to STH but methyl-2-imidazole in association with somatotropin decreases it.
The addition of calcium to the incubation medium decreases this uptake. EDTA and imidazole cause an increase in this uptake when no calcium is added. When calcium is added, then EDTA, at a high concentration, and methyl imidazoles have a definite positive effect.
Calcium plays a part in the effects of the two associations STH-theophylline and STH-methyl-2-imidazole on the uptake of D-xylose.
