Abstract

When infused at the rate of 10 ng/kg/hr during 144 hours in lambs, pentagastrin and purified porcine gastrin increased significantly the daily fecal excretion of water, calcium and inorganic phosphorus in intact and in thyroidectomized lambs. In intact animals, gastrin and pentagastrin induced a slight and non-significant hyperphosphaturia and hypomagnesiuria which did not appear in thyroidectomized lambs. Although gastrin has been shown to stimulate the release of calcitonin in sheep, it also seems able to influence the intestinal absorption of water, calcium and inorganic phosphorus in thyroidectomized lambs supplemented with thyroxine.
