Abstract

The respective effects of certain amino acids on carbohydrate metabolism of the liver have been studied in isolated rat liver preparations. It has been shown that - unlike the other amino acids investigated - leucine generally enhances glucose release of the liver while increasing its glycogen content. Given simultaneously with insulin of a concentration ineffective in itself, leucine increased the effect of insulin on liver metabolism. The significance of the observation in the reduction of blood sugar upon the effect of leucine is discussed.
