Abstract
Plasma glucose and immunoreactive insulin responses to oral glucose were measured before and after one week, two week and eight weeks of tolbutamide administration in ten nonobese maturity-onset diabetic patients.
The glucose tolerance was significantly improved after the eight weeks treatment.
The insulin response, very poor before treatment, was already significantly increased after one week and remained improved after eight weeks tolbutamide administration.
It is concluded that glucose tolerance improvement after chronic tolbutamide therapy, in the defined category of patients, results from increased insulin response to glucose stimulus.
