Aromatic Metabolites in Cell Suspension Cultures of Galium mollugo L.
Publication History
Publication Date:

Abstract
Cell cultures of Galium mollugo L. were established in various liquid media. The hormonal and nutritional components of the media were varied in order to observe the qualitative and quantitative effects on cell growth and on production of secondary metabolites (anthraquinones, anthraquinone glycosides and naphthols). Different media not only influenced the total amounts of aromatic metabolites produced but also the absence or presence of individual metabolites. It was shown that iridoids, which are present in the intact plant, are not produced by the suspension cultures and that the non–production of these compounds is not due to a lack of appropriate biosynthetic precursors within the cells.
