Abstract

A simple and easy method for the determination of sennosides (A&B) in senna powder is developed. The method depends upon reducing the glycosides into 1,8 dihydroxy–3–carboxylic acid anthranol using sodium dithionite in 0.05M borax solution. The yellow colour produced is measured at 390 nm. The results obtained are in good agreement with the sodium hydroxide–hydrogen peroxide colour reaction.
