Abstract

From the bark of Magnolia grandiflora L. are isolated three crystalline glycosides named magnolidin, magnolenin and magnosidin in addition to the known alkaloids magnoflorine and candicine. The water-soluble fraction of the alcoholic extract was chromatographed on Sephadex–LH 20 from which were eluted successively the alkaloid mixture, the magnolenin-magnosidin mixture and finally, magnolidin. Each was subsequently purified and characterized. Magnolidin is the major glycoside of the bark.
