Abstract
Undifferentiated suspension cultures of Corchorus olitorius and C. capsularis were developed from germinating seeds. The isolated sterol mixture from the tissue of C. olitorius contained campesterol, sitosterol, and stigmasterol as determined by gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. No cardiac glycosides were found in extracts of either of the two cultures. Minute amounts of 5 alkaloids were detected in cultures of C. olitorius, but were present in amounts too small to purify and identify.
