Abstract

Isolated latex incubated with L–methionine (14C–methyl) and S–adenosyl–L–methionine (14C–methyl) indicated that methyltransf erase enzymes were present in the latex of P. somniferum. The major alkaloids were separated by TLC and autor adiography followed by isolation showed that radioactivity occurred in reticuline, papaverine, codeine and thebaine, but was not detected in narcotine.
