Abstract
The latex of two species of the genus Elaeophorbia (Vam. Euphorbiaceae) were shown by means of biological analysis involving the mice ear assay to be highly irritant. The irritant dose 50 % (ID SO) was similar to several latices from Euphorbia species, being within the range 8.4 to 17.0 fig per 5 μl of acetone extract. By means of TLC, GLC, mass-spectrometry, circular dichroism and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the parent alcohol of the irritant ester fraction was identiefied as the diterpene ingenol.
